What is Karate?
The most basic definition of karate is "a system of self defense
emphasizing efficiently struck blows". That pretty much sums
up the practical side of karate, and what both new and old karateka
strive to perfect in their study.
But quite often you'll hear the word 'do' after 'karate' - and
this means something very different than just a system of self defense.
'Do' means 'path' in Japanese - the Chinese refer to it as 'tao'
- and this is referring to the practice of karate. By training
in this martial art, you are stepping on a path of study that can
take you anywhere you want to go! The journey is truly a personal
one, that changes and deepens as the years pass.
